Home automation

Client: Conet Ltd.

Year: 2011-2013

I started working as an apprentice in the last year of University. A company was developing their own home automation system. I joined the team as Industrial Designer for the development of the physical objects of the system. I also worked on the UI design of the wall mounted remote control device and the CAD software which was responsible for installing and setting the system.

The following objects are in the system:

WALL TERMINAL

SMART LIGHT SWITCH

INFRA RED TRANSMITTER

GATEWAY

IO MODULES (Master and Slaves)

NODE (small and large)

Wall terminal

The most eye-catching object in the system (or at least the most interesting from the designer's point of view.) Before I started working at the company the first designs were like small computers mounted on the wall. I thought these were strange in a home environment. Given their light switch function, I got the idea that they should look more like wall mounted light switches combined with smartphones.

Gateway, IO modules, Nodes

On the background the gateway, the IO modules (master and slaves) and nodes enable the connection of inputs and outputs like switches, lamps, heating and several electronic devices to the system.

Smart light switch

A gesture controlled light switch fits for rooms that don't have a wall terminal.

The front panel contains transparent holes for infra sensors. The size and shape is the same as the wall terminal's as they are members of the same product range.

Infra red transmitter device

The infra red transmitter communicates with the wall terminal and functions like a wall mounted remote control for such things as the television or the AC. We only made it till the idea phase with this device. This cross like shape contains only four sensors but rotated in 45° its positioning is more versatile.
